Wild Rescue – Protea Trail Rehabilitation and Indigenous Plant Rescue

Wild Rescue NPC completed an important initiative to rehabilitate the “Protea Trail” and rescue indigenous fynbos plants within their nature reserve in Hessequa. This project ensured that vulnerable plant species, particularly those affected by past fires, were carefully relocated to Wild Rescue’s indigenous nursery for propagation, education, and long-term conservation efforts.

The project team, led by volunteer Aubrey Naude and supported by two local young people employed through Friends of the Biosphere and Hessequa Municipality grants, worked diligently to clear and restore the trail. Despite challenges caused by dense regrowth after the 2022 fire and the need to establish new trail routes, the team successfully completed the Protea Trail, providing safe access for visitors while protecting sensitive plant species.

The rehabilitation of the trail has had a positive impact on both the environment and the community. Visitors have praised the clear trail, improved signage, and the stunning views over the Goukou River, enhancing their experience of the reserve and the region’s biodiversity. The project also offered hands-on training for local youth, building skills in plant identification, safe removal techniques, nursery care, and environmental stewardship.

While additional trails remain to be cleared, the completion of the Protea Trail marks an important step towards sustainable trail management and conservation in the reserve. The rescued plants now thrive in the nursery, supporting ongoing ecological restoration and education goals.

We are proud to have supported Wild Rescue NPC in this initiative and commend the dedication of the team who worked tirelessly to restore access to the Protea Trail, protect indigenous plant species, and foster appreciation for Hessequa’s unique natural heritage.
