Ultra Trail Sleeping Beauty

After playing a key role in the successful revival of the Sleeping Beauty Hiking Trail in 2023, Tielman Roos and Anja Louw have taken the lead in an inspiring initiative to restore all of the “lost trails” in the stunning Langeberg Mountains. With the help of community collaboration and the dedicated efforts of the Riversdale Voortrekkers, they have already cleared significant sections of the Kristalkloof and Rooiwaterspruit trails.

To support this important cause and ensure its long-term sustainability, Tielman and Anja have organised the development of an annual trail running event, with the first one set to take place on 5 April 2025. The course will feature sections that have been inaccessible for over 15 years, taking runners through picturesque mountain landscapes, fynbos, and forest areas, with stunning views over Riversdale and the Klein Karoo.

In preparation for the event, the Voortrekkers have been working tirelessly, volunteering their time to clear the trails. Thanks to their Friends Small Grant, they are now able to employ additional help to ensure the paths are ready on time.

The Ultra Trail Sleeping Beauty event is dedicated to the trails, as all proceeds will go towards maintaining these paths and managing the invasive alien plant species that threaten these precious natural areas. This project also lays the foundation for future eco-tourism, providing access to areas where more people can experience the region’s natural beauty.

Moreover, these trails will foster increased environmental awareness and contribute to the preservation of the area’s unique biodiversity by facilitating the removal of invasive species.

We eagerly anticipate witnessing the continued transformation of our cherished Langeberg Mountain Trails—an endeavour that promises lasting benefits for both the local community and the environment for years to come.
