The U3A Stilbaai Bird Group makes significant contributions to advancing birdwatching, driving environmental awareness, and offering the public unique glimpses into the world of Still Bay’s extraordinary native birds. Through citizen science programmes like SABAP2 Atlassing, regular birding outings, and initiatives such as the Sunset Ponds Bird Hide Project, they foster a deep appreciation for local birdlife and the environments in which these species thrive.
The Sunset Ponds Bird Hide Project began in 2023 with the goal of revitalising the Roland Rudd Bird Hide in Still Bay. It includes art programmes for local youth from Bertie Barnard and Melkhoudfontein Primary Schools, merging creativity with environmental education and inspiring future generations to cherish and protect our feathered friends.
We are thrilled to support this impactful project by providing funding to erect a strategically placed wooden fence at the Roland Rudd Bird Hide, aiming to reduce disturbances to birds and create a safer space for nesting and breeding. This aspect of the Sunset Ponds Bird Hide Project is designed to encourage more breeding pairs, promote indigenous species, and contribute to the larger objective of enhancing awareness and fostering appreciation of our natural world through birdwatching.
