In 1999, Lynette Janse van Rensburg launched Red Poppies Interiors & Gift Shoppe on the conviction that a home should mirror one’s personality and way of life. After honing her skills in Johannesburg—where she earned qualifications from RAU and the Calder School of Interior Design—Lynette made her way to Oudtshoorn in late 2017. She took over the much-loved Robin’s Nest Interiors in April 2018, and by September 2020, she had revived her original vision under the Red Poppies name.
From the initial concept right through to the finishing touches, the Red Poppies team offers a fully integrated interior-design service complemented by a carefully curated gift emporium. Their in-house workroom produces bespoke draperies, cushions and upholstery, turning safari-themed children’s rooms, boutique guest-house makeovers, café fit-outs and executive offices into spaces of timeless elegance infused with warm Karoo hospitality.
True to Lynette’s belief that beautiful design should never cost the earth, curtains and blinds are delivered in reusable fabric transfer bags, which are reused for the next client. Any leftover off-cuts of fabric find new life in the workroom’s latest creations such as planter and make-up pouches, while sturdy paper bags step in when fabric stock runs low. Even outdated fabric swatch books escape the landfill, finding their way into local schools and old-age homes where they serve as inspiration for art and craft projects.
Strengthening their commitment to community and environment, Lynette and her team have joined the Friends of the Biosphere programme, making monthly donations that support eco-focused volunteer initiatives in the Oudtshoorn region. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lynette and the entire Red Poppies family for becoming a true local Hero of the Biosphere.
