The Goukou Estuary Rehabilitation project is taking action to strengthen green spaces along the Goukou River to restore habitat and boost biodiversity in Stilbaai.
Tuin Op die Brak Stilbaai and Stilbaai Tourism, are implementing the Goukou Estuary Rehabilitation initiative. The project focuses on rehabilitating the estuary banks through the expansion of existing planting nodes and targetted reintroduction of indigenous plant species.
The work builds on planting interventions undertaken during Arbour Month in 2025. The next phase will involve clearing invasive alien plants from targeted areas, followed by the planting of appropriate endemic species.
A Small Grant of R3,000 from the Friends of the Biosphere Programme will be used to purchase endemic plants, compost, wooden droppers, tree guards, and other equipment. All labour will be undertaken voluntarily by approximately 12 community members.
The purpose of the initiative is to take practical steps toward rehabilitating the estuary banks, promote eco-tourism in Stilbaai, and increase indigenous vegetation within the urban environment.
