Dana Bay Urban Conservancy is implementing the Danabaai Alien Vegetation Clearing initiative, a project focused on the rehabilitation and ongoing management of a green space in Dana Bay through the removal and control of invasive alien vegetation.
Invasive alien plants continue to threaten the ecological integrity of the site, reducing biodiversity and impacting the long-term health of this important coastal green space. This initiative takes a practical, long-term approach by combining targeted clearing operations, regular maintenance, and local skills development to support sustained ecological restoration.
Funds are provided to purchase essential equipment, including knapsack sprayers, masks, and gloves, to support ongoing clearing activities over an extended period. In addition, five local community members are receiving training and participate in clearing operations, gaining practical experience in invasive plant management while contributing directly to the rehabilitation of the site.
In partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), training will take place in May 2026. Following this, clearing and maintenance interventions will commence in June 2026, coordinated by the Dana Bay Urban Conservancy Committee. DFFE will support the project through the provision of herbicides and ongoing monitoring to ensure effective implementation and progress tracking.
The initiative forms part of a broader vision to restore ecological integrity across local green belt areas while creating meaningful employment opportunities and strengthening community capacity for future conservation work.
