With support from the Friends of the Biosphere programme, the Earth Legacy Foundation will launch the Clean Ocean Drive, an initiative which will focus on clean-ups along targeted reefs along the Mossel Bay and reduce the threat of lethal fishing gear to marine life.
Fishing line, hooks and sinkers that snag on reefs pose a serious, ongoing hazard to fish, birds and other marine creatures. The Clean Ocean Drive will equip volunteers with the tools they need to safely complete the clean-ups and support the production and distribution of public awareness materials.
Following safety training , the team will carefully clear targeted sections of reef, removing and collecting fishing line, hooks and sinkers. After each dive, total metres of line removed and numbers of hooks and sinkers collected are recorded, to track progress and demonstrate impact.
We’re proud to support the Earth Legacy Foundation as they carry out this practical, hands-on work to protect Mossel Bay’s reefs and strengthen stewardship among the local fishing community.
