The Calitzdorp Art Festival Project is bringing together art, education, and environmental awareness through a series of creative workshops with local school learners.
This initiative focuses on connecting children with the natural world by introducing them to local birdlife and the important role these species play in the environment. Through engaging presentations by local bird photographer Sean Brand, learners are given the opportunity to see birds from a new perspective and develop a deeper appreciation for their value.
Building on this, the project invites children to express their understanding creatively. Guided art sessions will see learners painting birds or their own interpretations of them, turning knowledge into something tangible and meaningful. Funding will support essential materials, as well as refreshments, framing of selected artworks, and prizes to celebrate the learners’ efforts.
A group of learners will be selected to take part in a more advanced multimedia workshop, with their work forming part of an exhibition at the Calitzdorp Art Festival. This creates an exciting platform for young artists to showcase their creativity while sharing an environmental message with the wider community.
Running up to the festival opening on 24 April, the project not only encourages environmental awareness but also nurtures creativity and confidence in young people.
